Trauma Counseling Therapy

"Trauma" can refer to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, and it can affect both the mind and body. Trauma has a profound and lasting impact on mental health. It can change how a person thinks, feels, behaves, and relates to others—sometimes for years or even decades after the traumatic event has ended.

 

10 Common Signs and Symptoms of Trauma

  1. Intrusive Thoughts or Flashbacks

  • Re-experiencing the traumatic event as if it’s happening again

  • Disturbing memories, images, or nightmares

  2.  Avoidance

  • Avoiding places, people, conversations, or activities that remind you of the trauma

  • Emotional detachment or numbness

  3.  Hypervigilance

  • Constantly feeling on edge or “keyed up”

  • Easily startled, always scanning for danger

  4.  Mood Swings or Irritability

  • Sudden anger or frustration

  • Emotional outbursts or mood instability

  5.  Feelings of Guilt, Shame, or Self-Blame

  • Blaming oneself for the traumatic event

  • Deep feelings of worthlessness or failure

  6.  Difficulty Sleeping

  • Insomnia, nightmares, or restless sleep

  • Fear of sleeping due to disturbing dreams

  7.  Anxiety and Panic Attacks

  • Racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness

  • Overwhelming fear or dread without clear cause

  8.  Depression or Hopelessness

  • Persistent sadness, lack of motivation, or loss of interest

  • Feeling numb or emotionally flat

  9.  Dissociation

  • Feeling detached from yourself, others, or reality

  • “Spacing out” or memory gaps (especially in complex trauma)

  10. Physical Symptoms

  • Headaches, stomachaches, muscle tension, or fatigue

  • Trauma often manifests physically as well as emotionally

10 Long-Term Effects of Unresolved Trauma

  1.  Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex PTSD

  • Persistent flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, emotional dysregulation, and negative beliefs about oneself or the world.

  2.  Chronic Health Problems

  • Long-term trauma is linked to conditions like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, migraines, and gastrointestinal issues due to prolonged stress on the body.

  3.  Emotional Dysregulation

  • Inability to manage or understand emotions, often leading to mood swings, rage, numbness, or inappropriate emotional responses.

  4.  Relationship Instability

  • Difficulty with trust, fear of intimacy, codependency, or repeatedly engaging in toxic or abusive relationships.

  5.  Low Self-Worth and Identity Confusion

  • Persistent shame, self-blame, or lack of a stable self-image. Survivors often question who they are or feel “broken.”

  6.  Addiction and Compulsive Behaviors

  • Unresolved trauma often leads to substance use, disordered eating, or other addictive behaviors as coping mechanisms.

  7.  Dissociation and Memory Fragmentation

  • Feeling disconnected from one’s body or surroundings, or having memory gaps related to trauma or everyday life.

  8.  Anxiety and Depression

  • Ongoing fear, sadness, hopelessness, or emotional numbness, often resistant to typical treatments if trauma is unaddressed.

  9.  Self-Harm or Suicidal Ideation

  • Unprocessed trauma can lead to intense emotional pain that some try to manage through self-injury or thoughts of ending their life.

  10. Impaired Cognitive Function

  • Difficulty with focus, decision-making, memory, or learning. The brain remains in survival mode, reducing access to higher-level thinking.

I’m a student that was struggling with some past trauma from secondary school and I reached out to SC for help. Before meeting Lady SC, I was someone that often put a lot of pressure on myself, constantly comparing to others. I tend to push away any negative feelings I had for myself and towards others, brushing it off as me being mentally weak and not being able to push myself harder in life. This resulted me in turning to alcohol as a mean to relax and run away from my own issues. I often drank until I blacked out just to escape life. However, I met Lady SC and during our sessions I felt rejuvenated and am more in tune with my own emotions. I learnt that what I'm feeling is normal and okay, and lady SC helped me to unravel past traumas I had with my own family as well as teachers in school. Since then, I was able to learn how to embrace and let go of things, and thus my relationship with alcohol improved drastically. I am now able to drink alcohol without feeling the need to get drunk all the time, and I certainly can feel myself healing from her sessions. All in all, lady SC is a very nice person to talk to, and I feel very comfortable with her :)

I have been growing up in an abusive family for more than 10 years of my life. I find it very challenging to understand why it is so difficult to express my emotions easily given how I have been so used to suppressing it at home.
